Adorable Baby Shoes

More giveaways are trickling in for the August New and Expectant Moms event.  Today, we received 6 pairs of shoes from pediped (http://www.pedipedbabyshoes.com/Home/Home.aspx).  The shoes are so adorable.  The leather soles are really soft and flexible and the designs are super cute (especially the girl designs).  Following are the styles that will be given away....

momready

There are tons of parenting sites online.  One new website that I really like is
http://www.momready.com/.   The web magazine offers tips and topics for busy (like there is any other type) parents.  I also like that with just one click you can read the site's content in Spanish.

Soooo Cute!

We're having a New and Expectant Moms event in August with All AroundU.  I received one of the raffle prizes, a L’ovedbaby™  4-in-1 Nursing Shawl, yesterday.  The shawl itself is really nice and the packaging is soooo cute.  Personally, I didn't nurse in public, but I don't see how anyone could get upset with a mom nursing with this shawl.  Learn more at http://www.lovedbaby.com/index.html.

Burn Barney Burn

Barney is giving me a headache! I thought that Barney wasn't popular these days with kids.  I thought that I had been spared the "I love you.  You love me." madness.  I was wrong!  I don't buy videos and dvds for my son, but he received a 45 minutes tape called "Barney Songs from the Park" at the Target Children's Day.  He is hooked!  I've never seen anything like it.  He cries when the tape ends and whimpers, "rewind, rewind".  It has only been about a week and already my husband and I are fantasizing about burning the tape or "accidentally" leaving it at someone else's house forever.  Oh well, I guess that there are worse things that our son could be attached to...I guess...

How to Really Love Your Child

For Mother’s Day, I received (upon request) a really great book How to Really Love Your Child by M.D. D. Ross Campbell.

In the book, Dr. Campbell teaches parents how to practically express their love to their children.  The chapter that challenged me the most was “How to Show Love Through Eye Contact”.  As I read, I realized that the main times that I’m focused on my son having eye contact with me is when I’m trying to make sure that he’s listening to what I’m telling him to do (or moreso what not to do.)  I think that different moms will be challenged by different chapters.  I’ve already lent my book out to another mom friend (who also loves it and has been helped by it).  Although the book is written from a Christian perspective, I think that it can give practical advice to any mom.  Put it on hold at your local library or you can buy it at a variety of places, including www.amazon.com .

Baby Seller

There is a mom out there selling space on her (very cute) son.  I'm not quite sure why this doesn't feel right to me, but it doesn't.  Although it seems like the mom is doing it with the right intentions, there's just something off (to me) about branding your child.  It also turns out that there are women out there selling advertising space on their pregnant bellies.  I know that pregnancy and babies are "hot" right now, but I think that these types of actions are taking things a bit far. Personally I would run away from any advertiser who would put their temporary tattoo on a kid's head or a pregnant stomach for marketing purposes...but that's just me.

Kid Fitness

I heard about a great new show, Kid Fitness, from the Licensing 2006 International trade show at the Javits.  It's a (somewhat) new series based on an exercise video of the same title made by fitness trainer Paul Neville in 2003.  It is aimed at kids ages 2-8, and has been picked up by several local PBS affiliates.

With concerns about childhood obesity rising, this show is one way to help parents get their kids active. Kid Fitness' goal is "to educate, entertain, and get children moving by mimicking animals exercising."  For more information, visit http://www.kidfitnesstv.com/home.html

On a side-note, an even better way to get children moving is to cut off the tv/computer games, etc. and actually go outside and move.  There's so many free things to enjoy outside this summer, all (okay most) parents are without an excuse!

I Can't Believe She Said That!

"When you're walking down the street holding your daughter's hand, it makes you feel good when she looks good. It's like having the right car or the right handbag."

Kandoo Wipes

P&G has made me a customer for life!  Previously, I had requested some baby care products for the Mom in the  City giftbags and they sent me 20 packages of Kandoo flushable wipes (which was really nice).  Last week, a messenger came and said that he had a package for me from P&G, but he couldn't deliver it because it was too big. He came back today and delivered over one hundred boxes of Kandoo wipes!  Suffice it to say, that Kandoo products will be in every goody bag for the next 6 months or so...

Parent's Survival Guide to Summer

There is a great article regarding summer activity ideas in the Pocomo Record. It mentions the two schools of thought regarding making the most of the summer (structured activities including educational ones versus unstructured activities) and advocates striking a balance.

The article also includes activities to keep kids busy including a link to the U.S. Department of Education's "Summertime Funtime Activities" calendar for each day of the summer (www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content2/summertime.fun.html)

Fix and Freeze Dinners

6/11/06
Are you starved for time (rhetorical question...what mom isn't)? If so, eliminate the hassle of planning and preparing meals, by joining the "fix and freeze" movement. This concept of dinner planning has exploded. For about two hours, participants take part in cooking sessions in professional kitchens where they can assemble 12 to 24 healthy family meals and then take them home to eat later.

A few examples: Let's Dish, Sayrelyn's, Super Suppers, My Girlfriend's Kitchen, Dinner by Design, Supper Thyme, Supper Solutions, Let's Eat Dinner, Gourmade Cookery, Dream Dinners, and Dinner Helpers. Prices vary so shop around!

Flat Rate Cleaners

6/11/06
You may begin to notice that I write about laundry services fairly often. That is because as a Manhattanite, I didn't do my own laundry for four years. Now that there's a laundry in my building, I've run out of excuses (and it turns out that I actually enjoy getting out stains!). For those who still have a reason (or the extra funds) to send their laundry out, I recommend Flat Rate Cleaners (https://flatratecleaners.com/). Not only do they have (relatively) reasonable rates, but they also pick up baby items for donation to Room to Grow (www.roomtogrow.org) ... one of my favorite charities!

Elite Home Schooling

6/11/06
In what is an elite tweak on home schooling — and a throwback to the gilded days of education by governess or tutor — growing numbers of families are choosing the ultimate in private school: hiring teachers to educate their children in their own homes." Read more at... www.nyt.com

The Laundress

5/9/06
The Laundress (http://www.thelaundress.com/) is a collection of high-end fabric detergents and care products.

When Lindsey Wieber, a sales executive for Chanel and Gwen Whiting, a senior designer for Ralph Lauren, realized that their expensive clothes were suffering from dry cleaning, they took matters into their own hands and created The Laundress. Their line of premium fabric care products provides detergents for superior fabrics, from wool/cashmere shampoo to baby detergent. In their own words: “All fabrics are different - everything needs to be treated differently. All of our products were developed for a specific reason.”

Adding to the sense of luxury, detergents and care products come in four signature fragrances: Classic, Cedar, Baby and Lady. The Laundress range also includes laundry bags and 'wet' swimsuit pouches.

Previously, Springwise wrote about Laundry Spa (http://www.thelaundryspa.com/) and Slate (http://www.slatenyc.com/), two laundry services with a deluxe touch. Unlike these services, which are both based in Manhattan, The Laundress extends the luxury laundry concept to consumers all over the United States, and is making its way across the rest of the world.

Mommy Lit is hot, hot, hot. One of the books that has been receiving a lot of praise is Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay : And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom written by Los Angeles comedian and television writer and producer Stefanie Wilder-Taylor. In the book, she talks about sharing parenting responsibilities with your husband, meeting other new moms, and other areas of new mommyhood.
