Expectant Mom Needs Advice Re. Adjusting to NYC

FYI: (in case you or someone that you know can be of assistance)...

1I  thought you might of some assistance to a Swiss expectant-mother moving to NYC. Not only is she new to the United States, but she is looking for someone who has gone through the same experience to speak with her about having a baby in the United States and specifically in New York City. My company, Cartus, is an international relocation firm based in Chicago. In support of international relocations we produce one to two day cross-cultural training sessions. During these programs, participants hear from a variety of presenters on daily life, business, social customs and history. This particular program is for a younger couple from Switzerland. It is taking place on August 16 & 17, 2006 in our offices in Manhattan. The best fit would be someone from Switzerland who could speak on the above topics, but if there is anyone from Europe interested, please her contact me. The presentation would last 1.5 hours.Cartus does offer an honorarium and reimburses for reasonable transportation expenses (round trip mileage, train, bus, taxi, etc.). Please feel free to pass on my contact information. I look forward to hearing from your organization.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Best regards,

Toddler Book Recommendations

My two year old son is very particular about the books that are picked out for him.  We've had a lot of misses, but several hits.  His latest favorites... (and what I like about them)

-Maisy Loves You by Lucy Cousins (actually, he likes almost all of the Maisy books...short sentences, simple pictures; friendship focused...my son can "read" this book to me)
-The Seals on the Bus by Lenny Hort (animal version of the "Wheels on the Bus"; silly; reinforces animal sounds)
-I Can Do It Too by Karen Baicker (very cute!, teaches self reliance and family interaction)
-I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont (although grammatically incorrect, it's a fun read that reinforces colors and body parts)

Warning: Be prepared to read these books over and over again (but that's not such a bad thing).

New TV Series About NY Moms

In case you're interested...  "We are currently developing a new reality series that will follow the lives of modern families in NYC as they begin the famously difficult admissions process for Manhattan’s top private schools. In this documentary series, our cameras will follow the daily routines of the hottest and hippest families living and working in the best city on Earth.

Think “Real Housewives of Orange County” --- if the housewives had to deal with Admissions Directors, application deadlines, interviews, first choice letters, and ERB’s.

We are currently looking for NYC parents about to begin applying to get their little ones into the top private schools in the city – whether it’s pre-school or grade school.

Interested applicants can call the Supernanny hotline at: 1-877- NANNY-TIME, and mention ‘Manhattan Moms’, for more information. Or they can email us at mail@ricochettelevision.com"

Madison Square Kids 2006

Several moms and I went to see Astrograss perform at Madison Square Park today.  It was a lot of fun.  There were tons of moms/caregivers and little kids dancing to the music and/or sitting around.  Everyone was really friendly and it wasn't too hot, because the Oval Lawn (where the concerts are held) is well shaded.  I highly recommend this free concert series!

Functional and Cute

New and expectant moms, save the date: August 18th from 7-9pm.  We're going to have our first annual "New and Expectant Moms" event with (urbanbaby.com featured) All AroundU.  We're going to try to keep the price reasonable ($30 tops).  More information will follow...

Meanwhile, great raffle prizes are trickling in...

Yesterday, I received the cutest little swaddler from Suzy Creamcheese (http://www.suzycreamcheese.com/swaddlers.html).  It's so practical too...I always had a hard time swaddling my son with a blanket when he was a newborn.

I also received a really great infant car seat from Peg Perego (http://www.pegperego.com/).  It's light, but sturdy with side impact protection.

Just Desserts

If you are a mom who loves dessert (more than dinner at times!), read on...

"The newest addition to the niche restaurant scene is the dessert bar. Room 4 Dessert (New York), Espai Sucre (Barcelona) and our most recent spotting, ChikaLicious (New York), limit their menus to creative concoctions that satisfy even the most ardent sweet tooth.

A tiny 20-seat eatery in New York, founded by husband and wife team Don and Chika Tillman, ChikaLicious offers a 3-course menu for USD 12, consisting of a sweet amuse, the customer's choice of main course dessert, and petit fours to top it off. The menu features dishes such as Honey Parfait in Blackberry Soup with Tarragon and Lace Crisp, and the signature Fromage Blanc Island Cheese Cake.

The owners explain: "The idea behind an all dessert restaurant was something that we'd been thinking of for quite a while. Here in New York City, if you want a really fine dessert that's taken seriously, you have to go to one of those fine restaurants. We wanted to create a place that would allow you to go have noodles across the street and then come here for a very nominal price to have a wonderfully treated dessert."

A fun idea that lets adults live out their childhood fantasy of skipping dinner and going straight to dessert. The dessert bar is also a welcome addition to regular restaurants that work with tight seating schedules and rush customers from appetizers to cheque. Less need to hurry through dessert if it can be enjoyed at leisure elsewhere. A delicious opportunity if there every was one!

I love being able to stay at home with my son and work from home as the host of Mom in the City.  Some days it is a challenge balancing these two roles, but emails like the following snippet make my day!
"First, the event at Saks was great. It was great to meet you personally. The fact that you greeted us at the door made me feel special...I had not felt special since I was pregnant and as a new mom, details matter..." - A.Y.

Crayola Bathtub Tints

One of the fun things about running Mom in the City is that I get to sample the goody bag items (not the giveaways, just the goody bag items).  One of the items in this month's goody bags is a jar of the new Crayola Bathtub Tints by PopRocket.  I used a couple of the blue tablets in my son's bath last night.  They are really great!  The two blue tablets turned his bath water a beautiful turquoise...it reminded my husband and I of the waters of the Dominican public.  An added plus is that my son was so intrigued with the blue water that he jumped into the tub by himself and began playing with his tub toys.  (Lately, either I or my husband have had to pull on a bathing suit to be in the "big tub" with him).  Also, at the end of the bath, there was no extra clean-up. (I had imagined a blue ring around the tub.) I definitely give this product two thumbs up!
