September Giveaway - Crayola® Tub Boat

Crayola is giving away Tub Boats to the first 30 kids who attend our September 25th Fall Family Happy Hour at MoonSoup.

Back in March, I wrote about how much my son enjoyed this boat: “The next item that he tested was the "color dotz tub boat".  You put dotz into each of the boat wheels, pull the flag post, and put the boat in the bath water.  The boat then travels through the tub, coloring the water.  It works really well at coloring the water and is a fun boat to play with at the same time.  Michael really liked it.”

For moms who have an immediate interest / can’t make the MoonSoup event, the boat is sold online at www.crayolastore.com and can be found at retailers such as Toys R’ Us and Wal-Mart.

7 Favorite Things for 2007 (September)

This time, I'll be focusing on my favorite September/Fall magazine issues:

  1. Domino (http://www.dominomag.com/): The Adventuress is one of my favorite regular  columns (in this issue, she trails a top NYC decorator).  I also love paper, so “the domino guide to stationery” is also a good read.
  2. InStyle Makeover:  Their Fall 2007 issue gives some great, practical ways to update your makeup, clothes, etc. for real women.  I especially like their reader transformation article and "How to Wear Fall's Top Trends".
  3. O, The Oprah Magazine (http://www2.oprah.com/omagazine/omag_landing.jhtml): The September issue is full of great articles including Vera Wang's line for Kohl's and articles about Fantasia Barrino and turning your ideas into reality.
  4. Parents (http://www.parents.com/parents/?_requestid=333637&_requestid=333637): They have a really good article on page 216 "What Kids Really Learn in Preschool" and I also like the article, "Good Kids, Bratty Behavior".
  5. Parenting (http://www.parenting.com/parenting/): I especially like their "Talk to Me" article on page 89 and "How to Be a Great Mom" (as if that topic could be summed up in one article!)
  6. Real Simple Family: This special issue by Real Simple is on the stands until early October.  It's full of great solutions for simplifying family life.  All of the helpful information is great, but my favorite part is the feature "read this when..." which are letters from parents to their young children to be read in the future at various special occasions.  Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes!
  7. Working Mother (http://www.workingmother.com/?service=vpage/106): I'm a stay at home mom but I also work part time from home, so I love this magazine.  "This is How She Does It", "Entrepreneur Mom" and "Let's Eat" are standouts in the August/September issue.  There's also a series of articles of special interest to female lawyers.

O-P-R-A-H (Oprah)

“I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it!”  Oprah is taping her show’s season premiere in New York this year on September 10th and (guess what?) I’m going to be in the audience (yay!)  You don’t understand, I LOVE  Oprah.  Okay, I don’t actually know her, so I guess it’s moreso that I love what she’s done with her life, money and celebrity status.  Anyway, I’m super excited to be going to her show.  This is how it happened (because you know that I wasn’t able to get tickets off her website!)…

A married couple friend of mine’s was over our house for dinner last Tuesday.  After dinner, my girlfriend checked her messages.  An e-friend of hers had sent her an email saying that Oprah was coming to NY and that she and a guest were invited to be a part of the studio audience.  My friend read it casually and I screamed…”Take ME…I LOVE Oprah.”  She said okay and I started jumping up and down.  (I’m pretty expressive when I’m really excited.)  Both of our husbands were laughing at me.  My husband was happy that I was happy, but he’s not really a big talk show fan.  The only thing that he had to say was, “I hope that she says and you get a car; and you get a car…” (even though we already have a car and I don’t drive).

Anyway, I’m a list person and being in or on Oprah (the magazine or show) has been on my prayer list for the last couple of years.  Well, this isn’t exactly the same thing, but I’ll take it!

Still Stuck on Summer

I guess that I should be planning and focusing on the fall season, but I’m not.  I’m still stuck on summer.  Fall doesn’t begin until September 23rd, so I still have three more weeks to enjoy summer.  I haven't crossed off all of the things on my personal and family "Summer To Do List", so I hope to cross of the last three before summer ends.  They are:

1. Take my son to the New York Aquarium.

2. Go away for a long weekend to the Hamptons. [No, we're not (financially) rich...we just go off-season.  You'll be amazed at the prices that you can get if you go just a week after Labor Day.  Fortunately, my husband gets a gazillion holidays now that he's a teacher, so we'll be going away for the long Rosh Hashanah/Ramadan week-end.]

and

3. Go to High Tea at Lady Mendl's (http://www.innatirving.com/dining-lady.asp). [Although high tea isn't a traditional summer activity, it's one of the things that I love.  I vowed to myself that I would go to a different high tea at least once every three months. I'm going with a friend on the 22nd...I'm cutting it close.]

Don't forget  to end your summer on a great note!

What to Pay Your Nanny - The Top 10 Questions Parents Ask

I had an article published in the August 2007 Big Apple Parent based on questions that several moms had asked regarding nanny compensation.  You can see the full article here.  (If you're interested in reprinting this article, please email me at kcoleman@mominthecity.com.)

I Believe That I Can Fly

(Yes, that's a picture of me!)  I  took a beginner level Flying Trapeze class at Trapeze School New York (http://newyork.trapezeschool.com/).  It was amazing!  Initially, when I saw the school from across the street, I almost chickened out.  “What was I thinking” ran through my head as I hesitantly approached the Pier.  Fortunately, it looked a lot less scary up close and the school had the most beautiful views of the sky and the city.  “I can do this,” I kept telling myself.

When the class began, there was an instant sense of camaraderie amongst all of us first-timers. (Classes are small - no larger than 10 people - so that each person can get individual attention.)  Our instructor Jeff gave us some brief safety rules; demonstrated what we would (try to) do; and tightly put on our safety belts.  After marveling at my pre-baby looking waist, I realized that it was time to fly.

I volunteered to go first, so that I wouldn’t lose my nerve.  I climbed 23 feet up the ladder, jumped off the platform and hung on the trapeze by my hands three separate times.  It was scary to jump off the first time, but once I was off the platform, it was so much fun swinging back and forth and then letting go of the bar in order to fall into the net.  I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to do some of the other options (like the knee hang, flipping dismount or catching), but my goal is to be able to do some of those things the next time.

Overall, I was really excited to step out of my comfort zone...I was flying!  When I asked my fellow class members how they would describe their experience, they used phrases like “liberating”, “natural high”, “it helped me to let go”, and “an amazing experience”.  In any event, I highly recommend this class!
