As you have all experienced by now, there is a huge push to "go green" during the month of April with Earth Day and the heightened awareness regarding the 3 Rs (reducing, recycling and reusing).

Well, I've taken it all in with a grain of salt and here's my personal list of what I WILL do and what I WON'T do for good old planet earth.  Most of my decisions were based on two great books (Squeaky Green: The Method Guide to Detoxing Your Home and Big Green Purse)and one great website (Carbon Footprint).    (Of course as a woman and a mom, I'm free to change my mind at any time....)

WILL:
-eat less meat
-only shop for clothes, furniture and appliances as needed
-recycle
-take mass transit as much as possible
-use more earth-friendly cleaning products (like method)
-use a power strip (and remember to cut it off!) to save energy
-be more cautious of PVC in plastic toys
-take note of and support companies that are environmentally aware (i.e. Did you know that SunChips uses solar energy (70%) to help make their multigrain snacks?  It doesn't hurt that my son actually likes the taste too!)
-use a reusable tote (rather than plastic or paper bags) for groceries

(This is the tote that I have.  Isn't it cute?! AND it folds into its own little pocket so that I can easily take it with me.)

WON'T:
-only buy local, organic food
-buy secondhand clothes, furniture and appliances 
-compost
-make people take off their shoes when entering my home
-use all natural cosmetics and personal care products (like deodorant!)
-give up disposable diapers

In celebration of Barney's 20th Anniversary, one mom will win an all-new DVD release, Celebrating Around the World’.

This is a really good dvd.   I (Kimberly) received a copy last Monday and my almost 4 year old son has watched it at least once every day since then.  In the tape, Barney and a couple of kids travel around the world (Brazil, Japan,  India, Ireland, and Africa) to see the way various cultures celebrate.  Foods, dances, games and songs from the various cultures are introduced as well as concepts of sharing, taking turns, etc.  We especially like the dancing.  It's fun to see the kids (including my 11 month old!) try to do the various dances - especially the Irish jig and African dancing.  I highly recommend this DVD for Barney fans.

This week, I read the paperback version of The Joys of Much Too Much by Bonne Fuller.  I'm not quite sure if I mainly agree or mainly disagree with her points. 

In essence, Fuller advocates living as full a life as possible -- going for it all at the same time/living an unbalanced life. I think that this idea is right for some women. For example, even though I'm very careful to keep my life as simple as possible, I am by nature a "Type A" personality.  I must be juggling at least 4+ projects at any given time or I get totally bored.  At the same time, I know many women who would go crazy with my life (and I with theirs!).  So, I guess in essence this book is especially great if you want to juggle marriage, parenting, work, etc. all at the same time. 

I like that Fuller advocates following your passion.  I don't like how the book tends to look down on women who decide that they do want a simpler life or that they want to take time off from the "work world" to focus on raising their children. Rather than trying to prove that their choice (stay at home, work outside the home, work at home, etc.) is the right one, it would be refreshing for authors to share why they made their decision while at the same time acknowledging the validity of other women's choices. (I.e. Your choice doesn't necessarily have to be wrong for mines to be right.) 

Anyway, I digress.  Overall, I like this book a lot...it was a quick, lively read which I definitely recommend. 

I liked it so much that one Mom in the City member will receive a copy of the book as a January giveaway.  Good luck!

Diaper Cakes (http://www.bloomersdiapercakes.com/) are so adorable.  They sent us one of the yellow gerbera daisy ones for our New and Expectant Moms event on August 18th.  Each of the 3 tiers (100 diapers) is tied with pale yellow tulle and decorated with yellow Gerbera daisies.  It comes wrapped in white tulle, tied with a satin bow and fastened with an old-fashioned diaper pin.

New and expectant moms, save the date: August 18th from 7-9pm.  We're going to have our first annual "New and Expectant Moms" event with (urbanbaby.com featured) All AroundU.  We're going to try to keep the price reasonable ($30 tops).  More information will follow...

Yesterday, I received the cutest little swaddler from Suzy Creamcheese (http://www.suzycreamcheese.com/swaddlers.html).  It's so practical too...I always had a hard time swaddling my son with a blanket when he was a newborn.

I also received a really great infant car seat from Peg Perego (http://www.pegperego.com/).  It's light, but sturdy with side impact protection.

We're having a New and Expectant Moms event in August with All AroundU.  I received one of the raffle prizes, a L’ovedbaby™  4-in-1 Nursing Shawl, yesterday.  The shawl itself is really nice and the packaging is soooo cute.  Personally, I didn't nurse in public, but I don't see how anyone could get upset with a mom nursing with this shawl.  Learn more at http://www.lovedbaby.com/index.html.

P&G has made me a customer for life!  Previously, I had requested some baby care products for the Mom in the  City giftbags and they sent me 20 packages of Kandoo flushable wipes (which was really nice).  Last week, a messenger came and said that he had a package for me from P&G, but he couldn't deliver it because it was too big. He came back today and delivered over one hundred boxes of Kandoo wipes!  Suffice it to say, that Kandoo products will be in every goody bag for the next 6 months or so...
