method: detox your home new york

Method  is one of my new favorite companies of the year.  Every since I tried their all purpose cleaner, I've been more willing (and eager) to stop cleaning my home with harsher chemicals. (The cleaner works equally well as more toxic ones!)

The cool thing is that method has opened a SoHo pop-up shop location for a few weeks.  Of course, they will be selling their products there.  In addition, they'll be allowing custormers to safely dispose of their toxic household cleaners (you know, those ones that you have lying around that you don't know what to do with in a responsible way) by turning them in at the store.  In exchange, customers will get a free method product.  The details of the method shop are the following:

Where: 550 Broadway, NYC (between Prince & Spring); 212-994-5396
When: May 13 - June 7
Time: 10am - 7pm

On a personal note, I'm especially excited about method's visit to New York.  As a "method maven", I will be hosting a party there for some friends.  A portion of the event will be an interactive crafting event led by Danny Seo.  I'm extra excited because the party happens to fall the day before my birthday (yay!).

Dream Contest

Tommy Hilfiger and Glamour magazine are holding a "make your dream come true" contest, where they will document making three dreams come true.  (Off the top of my head, I think that they have to be able to make the dream come true for $10,000 or less and it has to be doable within a week's timeframe.)

When I read about the contest, I thought that I would have a hard time narrowing down my dream. When I really thought about it though, I didn't have any dreams for myself that fell within those parameters.  [A brownstone costs more than $10,000!]  Overall, it made me think of how lucky I am to be living out my dreams daily in the best city on the planet.  I did enter though.  My dream was to treat my mom from Virginia like the star that she is for a few days in NYC (luxe hotel; pampering day spa; Fifth Avenue shopping spree; and dinner and a Broadway show).  We could do these things for her one by one, but it would be nice to do it all in one shot.

Anyway, take some time to dream (for yourself and/or for your loved ones) and enter the contest at http://glamalert.com/dreamingcontest/.  Good luck!

Work/life Balance Survey

In case you're interested...
Villanova University is doing a study about what mothers want from the workplace. They are specifically interested in what stay-at-home moms will need if/when they decide to eventually pursue work outside of the home (e.g., what will they need as they transition back into the workforce? Onsite childcare? Flexible work hours? Supportive boss?).
If you're interested in taking their survey, click here.

SheSpeaks and Vocalpoint

I ran across this section in Trendwatching which mentions two services that I like to use.  You might want to try them out.  They're informative (and you get to try out free products!).

"Women in the United States can now sign up to test-drive new products in exchange for their honest opinions and reviews at SheSpeaks. Here's how it works: when users sign up, they complete a questionnaire about their interests, hobbies, likes and dislikes. SheSpeaks selects an appropriate product match, which the members receive in two to three weeks. Products are theirs to keep, and to try out in their own homes and as part of their everyday lives. In exchange, members provide their candid feedback online on the SheSpeaks website. Discussion boards allow testers to exchange views and opinions with other women who have tested the same products. After the review process, users can get the scoop on how their reviews may have impacted a product before it goes to market, which creates a nice feedback loop. Over 30,000 women from across the country have already signed up.

Procter & Gamble's Vocalpoint has a similar set up, but obviously focuses on P&G products ("for moms") only. According to BusinessWeek, Vocalpoint had more than 600,000 members in 2006. Time to partner with these folks?"

New York Office of The Mom Corps Opens

    FYI:

"I am incredibly excited to announce that I am opening the New York Office of an amazing company called Mom Corps (www.momcorps.com).  Mom Corps is an innovative staffing company that connects highly skilled mothers with flexible work assignments.

Mom Corps was founded in 2005 by Allison Karl O'Kelly, entrepreneur, CPA and Harvard MBA, and attracts highly accomplished business women in a variety of  professional fields including accounting, law, human resources, medicine, marketing and general business.  Our candidates are the highest caliber professionals with proven experience and nationally recognized top degrees.  We work with corporations to identify project, part-time and contract flexible positions that require the high-level expertise and experience of our candidates.  The obvious benefits are that corporations operate more productively without incurring additional overhead or benefits, while working mothers are able to achieve a far more effective and satisfying work/life balance.

Studies have shown that 37% of highly qualified women voluntarily leave their high powered jobs for some time period.  Usually this hiatus is prompted by family responsibility.  Of these women, 90% are interested in returning to work but require some level of flexibility.  We know the talent is out there.  And that's what we do - we find them and match their skill sets with the companies that need them.

This organization is putting into practice an idea whose time has come and I could't be more thrilled to head up this endeavor in the tri-state area.  I love New York and I believe that with the talent pool in our area and Mom Corps expertise we couldn't be better positioned to spearhead this effort in one of the most challenging and dynamic marketplaces in the world.

Please make a note of my contact information and feel free to share this email with other talented friends or colleagues who may be interested in learning more about Mom Corps.  If you know any professional women who are currently looking to get back into the workforce or who would like to explore more flexible options, please direct them to our website www.momcorps.com where they can submit their resume.

Thanks so much and drop me a line if you have any questions
    .

    Regards,
    Linda"

    Upper East Side Moms Documentary

    1
"I am the Casting Director for an original documentary on a major women's cable network about everyday life as a Mom in the city living on the Upper East side.  I am searching for ultra energetic moms who have chosen the unique lifestyle of having and raising their child in the city and affording them all the opportunities that come along with it and will stop at nothing to give their kids the world.

Moms whose philosophy is, "Life only got better and more active and fabulous after becoming a mom and has been an adventure ever since".
Moms who actively involved in socializing with other moms (playdates, group activities etc.)  Moms who host charity events and auctions, family museum memberships, children involved etiquette courses, Mom is a community volunteer, Moms who expose their child(ren) to a variety of extracurricular activities such as, visual art, foreign language and music or sports, Moms who coach kids teams, Moms familiar with the process of their child interviewing to get into a school and have experienced the torture of waiting for their acceptance letters, Moms who host dinner parties or frequently attend them with friends or Moms who have organized lavish birthday parties for their children.  These are just a few examples of the moms we are looking for, for this exciting and fun project.  I am looking for an ensemble for this project, so all moms are encouraged to inquire.  In theory at least one child in the age range of infancy-8 years of age, however this is not imperative.
Word of mouth is priceless, so feel free to forward my e-mail on to potential moms.  The deadline to apply is approaching, so please don't hesitate to email  momsinthecity@aol.com or call me directly 646.320.1790 whether you are nominating someone or considering this fun and fantastic opportunity for yourself and your closest girlfriends.

    Chicken Pox Party - NOT

A producer left me a message inquiring about chicken pox parties...whether our members participate in them or if I knew of one that was coming up.

Previously, I had read a couple of articles about these "parties" but didn't take it too seriously.  Apparently these parties are more prevalent than I had thought.  It appears that many families in the United States are organizing disease parties to expose their children to chicken pox rather than use the chicken pox vaccine.

Either the women I know (and I know hundreds of women) aren't participating in this trend or they are keeping very quiet about their involvement.  Personally, I would never willfully expose my child to disease. (I feel guilty when he gets sick after playing with a child whom I knew was sick with a cold!)  I'm not 100% on my opinion about the chickenpox vaccine yet, but if (and when) my child catches chicken pox, it will be the old-fashioned way...by accident!

Expectant Mom Needs Advice Re. Adjusting to NYC

FYI: (in case you or someone that you know can be of assistance)...

1I  thought you might of some assistance to a Swiss expectant-mother moving to NYC. Not only is she new to the United States, but she is looking for someone who has gone through the same experience to speak with her about having a baby in the United States and specifically in New York City. My company, Cartus, is an international relocation firm based in Chicago. In support of international relocations we produce one to two day cross-cultural training sessions. During these programs, participants hear from a variety of presenters on daily life, business, social customs and history. This particular program is for a younger couple from Switzerland. It is taking place on August 16 & 17, 2006 in our offices in Manhattan. The best fit would be someone from Switzerland who could speak on the above topics, but if there is anyone from Europe interested, please her contact me. The presentation would last 1.5 hours.Cartus does offer an honorarium and reimburses for reasonable transportation expenses (round trip mileage, train, bus, taxi, etc.). Please feel free to pass on my contact information. I look forward to hearing from your organization.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Best regards,

New TV Series About NY Moms

In case you're interested...  "We are currently developing a new reality series that will follow the lives of modern families in NYC as they begin the famously difficult admissions process for Manhattan’s top private schools. In this documentary series, our cameras will follow the daily routines of the hottest and hippest families living and working in the best city on Earth.

Think “Real Housewives of Orange County” --- if the housewives had to deal with Admissions Directors, application deadlines, interviews, first choice letters, and ERB’s.

We are currently looking for NYC parents about to begin applying to get their little ones into the top private schools in the city – whether it’s pre-school or grade school.

Interested applicants can call the Supernanny hotline at: 1-877- NANNY-TIME, and mention ‘Manhattan Moms’, for more information. Or they can email us at mail@ricochettelevision.com"
