“That was like the best cake ever” is a text message that I received from a parent after the boys’ birthday party. “I had to fight myself not to get another piece!” That sentiment seemed to be shared by adults and kids alike because the half sheet cake was completely gone by the end of the party. “It’s the frosting,” another friend gushed. “It’s not too sweet. It’s perfect.” While I would love to say that I baked the delicious dessert, I will not tell a lie.
Since my friend Nancy was kind enough to introduce me this particular cake several years ago when my goal was to plan a birthday party on a budget, I’m going to share where you can get the cake. I simply bought a plain half sheet cake with white frosting from Stop & Shop in Forest Hills and had them place a YouCake custom topper (that I had bought) on top of it. The topper didn’t really change the taste. Rather, it just added a fun element. “ I want the SpongeBob shirt piece,” one of the kids said. “I want to eat my head” Sean chimed in. (That would have been a little weird for him to say that at any other time but it made perfect sense in relation to the cake!) The customized cake that practically everyone loved ended up only being $50. The half-sheet cake toppers are $20 and the cake was $30. So, you can have the “best cake ever” too…for MUCH less than normal NYC bakeries charge for custom birthday cakes. (Thanks Nancy!)
