National Blood Donor Month iPod Shuffle Giveaway

January 5, 2009 by Kimberly · 32 Comments

(This year, I want to spotlight various charities and causes – at least one a month.)

JANUARY 2009 IS NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH. You can learn more on the AABB site.

“Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations. A reduction in turnout can put our nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.”

I will be donating blood this month. If you quality (age 17+, weigh at least 110 pounds, etc.) please consider donating also. As a little incentive, I’m going to give one Mom in the City reader who donates blood an iPod shuffle.

To enter, leave your name in the “Comments” section below or by sending an email to contests@mominthecity.com with “Charity” in the Subject line by January 31st. (Please only enter if you donate blood this month. It’s on your honor – I trust you!)

Awesome! I cannot give blood. But, my husband and son both do….and they also both just became donors to the Nat’l Bone Marrow Program!
We’ve recently lost a dear friend to cancer…so this program is very near to our hearts.

    Love the passion on here!

  10. Julie says:

After 4 years of pregnancy and/or breastfeeding, I was thrilled for a chance to donate again. Last year I didn’t donate because I had a virus (I had to take antibiotics for 3 months straight! I’m going to make an appointment this week!
BTW..my daughter’s best friend’s mom is in charge of marketing for our local blood bank. She keeps after me!

  11. Angela Hoagland says:

Sadly, I had not donated blood since I changed jobs (we used to have blood drives at work every other month so it was SO easy!) In August of 2008 they had a blood drive at the Kentucky State Fair. I donated then and my daughter was so happy about it, I make sure to find blood drives every 6 weeks! What a great idea for you to promote giving blood. Thank you.

I started donating when I dad had a hip replacement. They wanted blood on hand just in case. Since then I have tried to donate every 2 to 3 months. The blood bank comes to our neighborhood town center every other month. I last donated the week before Christmas.

  18. sue says:

The blood bank visits the company I work for and I give every time. They will be there next week and I plan on giving again. Easy way to help others.

  20. Pat says:

Thank you to everyone who donates

  21. Semira says:

I donate as often as I can. It’s convenient for me because the local high school hosts a blood drive every year and I live close by so I go. It’s nice to see someone spotlight this cause because I think too many people take the availability of blood for granted and think that there’s always more than enough circulating between hospitals. It’s just a little way for the healthy people to make such a big difference in the life of someone else.

I donated blood two Sundays ago, in honor of a little girl (friend of the family) who underwent brain surgery the next day.. Although my blood type might not match hers, she will need to undergo transfusions throughout the course of her treatment. I kept that in mind for all the little kids and grownups who need blood in my area! Plus, for more selfish reasons, I love the food freebies at the end of the donation procedure! They are so well-earned :D Thanks for the entry!
