Reduce Waste With These 7 Resale Sites (Giveaway)
April 10, 2009 by Kimberly · 7 Comments
The EPA shares that there are several ways to live more green by producing less waste. The three R’s of waste management (reducing the amount of trash thrown out, reusing items and recycling as much as possible) are lessons that we parents can learn and practice with our kids. Below are 7 sites that I’ve come across that can help:
1. Better World Books: This is a “green” online book reseller that helps customers recycle by buying used books. They keep a running tally on their site regarding the number of books that they have saved from landfills (over 22 million). On the environmental/social side, BWB offsets shipping environmental costs with carbon offsets from CarbonFund.org and they share revenues with literacy groups like Books for Africa. On the (equally important) economic side, their books are up to 80% cheaper than new ones and shipping is free.
2. Handmedowns.com: This classifieds site is exclusively for parents and devoted to baby and kids’ stuff. While there, users can buy, sell, give away or donate (to local charities) gently-used baby & kids stuff (i.e. strollers, toys, maternity clothes, etc.). This is a great way for parents to save (both money and the earth – by recycling) in regards to items that have short shelf lives. On a fun note, the site has hosted celebrity auctions where celebrity moms (Gwen Stefani, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Richie, etc.) have donated their kids’ hand-me-downs for charity.
3. InStyleBelly: This is an online maternity consignment boutique for expecting moms with style. New moms can put their (high-end to more affordable designer) maternity clothing on consignment. Meanwhile, expecting moms can dress fashionably without breaking the bank! It’s a win-win arrangement.
4. Kidzola.com: On this online classifieds site, parents can buy gently used children’s clothing and they can also sell items that their kids have outgrown. On this user-friendly site, ads are free and parents get to keep 100 percent of the profits. A helpful aspect of this site is that if you’re too busy, Kidzola will provide consultants in your state who you can drop your items off to for them to post an ad and sell your items for you.
5. Kijiji: This is eBay’s online classifieds site. They offer family-friendly local classifieds that are 100% free to post and free to use. (Unlike eBay, Kijiji doesn’t play a role in completing sales.) On a side note, a survey commissioned by Kijiji found that the average household has approximately 35 unused items in their home, with a resale value of approximately $670! Think about what you could do with that extra cash…
6. OLX:This is a completely free (even for jobs and real estate listings) online classifieds site. They host free classified advertisements and provide discussion forums sorted by various topics. As of January 2009, OLX was available in 87 countries and 36 languages. A couple of things that stand out about this site are that you are able to display your listings on your social networking pages (Facebook, Myspace, etc.) and you can access the site from your mobile phone.
7. The SOC Exchange: On this e-commerce website, members are allowed to buy and sell goods and find jobs for one (inexpensive) flat rate without any commission or listing fees. Sellers can create an online storefront to sell their goods for a subscription of $1 per month or $10 per year, flat rate. This site has over 150 webpage designs to choose from and even allows users to track their store traffic. This is a great way for users to sell unwanted items OR items that they have designed.
Many moms are looking to contribute more to the family budget especially at this time and I think that this service is a great way for them to do so. That’s why I’m happy to share that the SOC Exchange is offering a free year-long subscription to The SOC Exchange account to one Mom in the City reader.
To win, share one thing that you would sell on The SOC Exchange in the “Comments” section below by April 30th.

Great post! I sell on ebay, but the fees are getting outrageous! I’d love to sell some of my 7 year olds outgrown clothes.
Ginny’s last blog post..Barbie Thumbelina Dolls
I’d love to sell household items that are in good condition but we no longer use!
I’d sell my pre-baby evening dress. Despite how I love it, I can’t fit it any more. Thanks for the giveaway!
Bing’s last blog post..Giveaways Express
i knit, and i’d love to sell my creations: little baby booties, scarfs, caps, etc. It’s actullay not so much about making money, because i don’t think i can knit them fast enough to really be cost effective, but it’ll make me so proud if someone finds my crafts nice enough to be worth putting on their precious babies.
I would sell my jewelry. I used to sell jewelry but I don’t anymore and I want to sell it but I have been too intimidated by ebay to start. This might just be the perfect thing for me! Thanks for the chance!
I have alot of kids clothers and books. to sell.
