I reviewed The Mom’s Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home by Terra Wellington last month on this post. I enjoyed it so much that I’m giving one Mom in the City reader a copy.

I have been married for thirty-five years now. My darling husband and I were green before it became fashionable.

It is easy to make your life greener – we recycle, have our house powered by solar, take our water from our own well and we grow our own food. People do not realize that growing your own food saves in lots of different ways including but not limited to saving the fuel it take to process and transport the fruits and vegetables – also it is so much healthier for your family. We plan our week so that we only have to drive into town once a week.

The best part of always having been a green family is that we naturally passed our philosophy and techniques on to our sons. Both of them have never known any different! They are green, and don’t even realize it. It is very rewarding to go to their house and see them live their lives, leaving a smaller footprint on the planet.

Zoey, I’m very impressed! You’re truly a “green” family!!! My husband and I just celebrated our 10 yr wedding anniversary last week, so comparatively we’re amatuers. Our 2 kids (2 and 5 yr old) are very keen on being green because that’s “trendy”. I think that’s great too. They bring water bottles to school (rather than box juice), and they both know to Reduce/Reuse/Recycle. My 5 yr old daughter is obsessed about “not wasting”, like turning off lights, turning off water faucets, etc.

  4. I have stopped using plastic grocery bags. You can find me carrying reusable bags all the time now. I get upset when I inadvertently leave one home when I realize I am making a purchase. If available I go ahead and buy another bag because it makes sense.

I take brief showers and don’t run water when I am brushing my teeth. I am using a water filter now so I don’t purchase bottled water.

We’re setting up a worm composting bin in our kitchen, to compost our vegetable waste. Then we’ll use it on one of our city garden plots.

One way we are going green is by completely renovating our kitchen to recycle and reuse everything. We are setting up a compost. We are only using energy star rated appliances, and products that are earth friendly, green, good for the environment. We have an organic garden. We only drink filtered water from home – we each have our own reusable bottles – for all 6 of us. I have our reusable bags ready to go in our van. Blessings.
