Reknit (Without Even Having To Knit The First Time!)

I’m fascinated with people who can knit. There is just something about being able to make a creation out of yarn and a couple of needles that makes me smile. My mom is a great knitter. (She has become better over time. The baby blanket that she knit Michael…let’s just say that I kept it out of sentimentality. I kept the baby blanket that she knit for Sean because it was really well made.) She is willing to teach me how to knit, but I don’t really want to learn how to do it myself. I just enjoy seeing other people do it. Perhaps that is why I think reknit is such a wonderful idea.
The concept is very simple. Each month, the mom of artist Haik Avanian turns your old knit products into something new. This month she is turning old sweaters into new scarves. You just send in an old sweater and get a scarf (made out of the unraveled/reknit material) for $30. What I like even more is that you don’t even need an old sweater. The site will link you to your nearest Goodwill to find a sweater. How cool and environmentally-friendly is that? The last thing that is fun about this site is that Haik lets his readers decide what his mom should reknit the next month. (“Cut-off Gloves” are currently in the lead.)

Why didn’t I think of this concept? It would have been a great way to put my retired mom to work. Smile.

Also, speaking of knitting… Jennifer James shared a great every day philanthropy post (http://www.bostonmamas.com/2009/11/simplifying_the_holidays_everyday_philanthropy.html) — one awesome idea was knitting for those in need of warm goods. Can you imagine combining the eco-repurposing + philanthropy? I love this idea! -Christine

As much as I love the idea to knit, I find it so difficult to follow. I guess it’s my way of dancing with two left feet but in this case, sewing with 2 left hands.
I love it but can’t follow. To think my mom does so much amazing kniting. Unfortunately, she’s reduce alot due to arthritis. What a bummer because she loves it. She so in peace!
