Is Valentine’s Day Just A Commercial Holiday?
January 27, 2010 by Kimberly · 7 Comments
My husband and I don’t really celebrate a lot of holidays with gifts. Birthdays are the big things in our home. For Valentine’s Day, we usually just write each other a love note (at my request). Sometimes we also go out for a special dinner. It really has not been a big deal to me.
I’m excited about Valentine’s Day this year though. My husband and I are going to a Marrieds Retreat in New Jersey. This will be the first time ever that we are both leaving our kids overnight. It’s only one night, so I’m not too concerned. Also, they are getting older and are actually looking forward to spending the night over their aunt and uncle’s house. (The day after we come back, the family is going to Bear Mountain for a few days. We need a bit of sky, fresh air and a break from the busy nature of city life.)
What about you? History aside (which you can read about in The History of Valentine’s Day on History.com), what are your thoughts regarding Valentine’s Day? Is it really a time that you celebrate those whom you love – romantically, family and friends – or is it just another commercialized holiday?

Kimberly, have fun and enjoy your trips (both the Marrieds retreat and the Bear Mountain trip). Commercialized or not, it’s to spend time with the ones we love, so I’m all for it. This year is double the fun, 2/14/10 coincides with Lunar New Year. The following week is Winter Break for my kids. It’s been a really stressful week for my family, due to a death in the family, and my husband is in Japan now. I’m really looking forward to some family time and fun Valentine/NewYear/WinterBreak events.
Sounds wonderful! Enjoy your time for its good to have an “Us” moment from time to time.
My husband also planned a get away to Mystic, CT for Feb. weekend. We are celebrating: My birthday 2/11, Valentine Day, 2/14, and Our 8th Anniversary 2/15th. This is a big month for us and when I say us I really saying me…..LOL.
We technically don’t do a grand thing for Valentine Day just gives a note or exchange loving words and seal it with a kiss.
We are definitely looking forward to the getaway. It’s been ages since we’ve done something without kids. It’s overdue and we’re burnt out, so this 4 day get away will be enjoyed to the fullest.
Have a wonderful time and as always, enjoy this site.
Peace.
Have a wonderful time Kimberly. Each Valentine’s Day, my husband and I enjoy a special night out. We splurge on a great evening. We really go all out- fine restaurant, fine wine….. I really look forward to February 14th each year.
I think the idea behind the Valentine’s Day is a good one (a day to actively show our love to our family and friends), but I also think the holiday has been way over-commercialized. Tim and I don’t really do anything different on that day…we prefer to show our love in the small things, all year-round.

That sounds like a fun way of spending Valentine’s Day! We don’t really celebrate holidays either, we don’t actually even celebrate birthdays.. we eat out and buy “smart gifts” (like ski jacket or GPS) we need anyway.. But we spoil each others on everyday life.

Yeah, I think it is just another darn commercial holiday suckering and pressuring tons of people get each other gifts. My boyfriend and I usually do something special, like do something a bit out of the ordinary, but spending a ton of money on valentine’s day just seems silly to me. It’s like, you already know I love you, we don’t need a day to say that to each other, those are my thoughts.

I love valentine’s day! I know it’s kinda cheesy, but I think it’s a great day, that is if you have a significant other, if you don’t oh boy, it can be tough. But I agree, there is no need to buy each other such expensive unnecessary gifts!
