January 2010

My husband and I don’t really celebrate a lot of holidays with gifts. Birthdays are the big things in our home. For Valentine’s Day, we usually just write each other a love note (at my request). Sometimes we also go out for a special dinner. It really has not been a big deal to me.

I’m excited about Valentine’s Day this year though. My husband and I are going to a Marrieds Retreat in New Jersey. This will be the first time ever that we are both leaving our kids overnight. It’s only one night, so I’m not too concerned. Also, they are getting older and are actually looking forward to spending the night over their aunt and uncle’s house. (The day after we come back, the family is going to Bear Mountain for a few days. We need a bit of sky, fresh air and a break from the busy nature of city life.)

What about you? History aside (which you can read about in The History of Valentine’s Day on History.com), what are your thoughts regarding Valentine’s Day? Is it really a time that you celebrate those whom you love – romantically, family and friends – or is it just another commercialized holiday?
