(Tuesday 11pm update: Michael was right…Obama is our President elect. I just finished jumping up and down and clapping my hands. People are screaming “Obama” in my Harlem neighborhood…the joy is unbelievable!)
Usually, I try to take a break from writing on Wednesdays, but I just have so much to share – especially this week.
I must say that I’m so glad that this election is over. As I write this post, I have no idea who won. I hope that it’s Obama but the world won’t end if it’s McCain either. I just hope that we (as Americans) will support WHOEVER wins. They will need all of our support and frankly, I’m so tired of all the divisiveness of late.

Michael in the Booth

Sean’s “Hand” In This Vote

Sealing My Vote
In any event, the pictures are of me in the voting booth with my two boys. (My husband voted after work and school.) The thing that I love about living under a democracy is that every vote counts. I’m happy to be able to involve my kids in the process. On Monday, I told Michael (my four years old son) that we would be voting on Tuesday. He asked if he would be able to vote. When I said no (because of his age), he wasn’t too happy. So, I told him that I would vote for him and asked him whom he wanted me to choose. “Barack Obama,” he said with a big smile. “He’s going to be the President of the United States!” We’ll see if Michael was right….
On Tuesday, the lines were long (about an hour and a ½ wait), but the mood was festive. As we waited, people would drive by and yell “Obama!” out of their windows. (I was thinking to myself, “They better have voted too!”) The elderly people in line were sweet and funny. One went and bought some goodies for the kids waiting in line. Another had several of us laughing. He said something to the effect of, “I’m out here standing in this long line. Obama better win. If he doesn’t, I’m going to go beat him up for wasting my time.” All in all, the wait was relatively painless. Michael declared that “the vote thing” was his “favorite part of the day”. Mine’s too!

Today, I’ll be posting about the Animal Kingdom aspect of the Disney trip. I’ll be talking more about the people that I met during the entire week-end next week, but I did want to introduce you to the nine other wonderful African American moms that attended the mixer:
ALSO…
A few of us promised Ryan who works at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn that we would give him a mention on our blogs. He was a really sweet guy who knew little to nothing about blogs, but he promised to read them to see if we would write about him. “Hi Ryan!”

Free Credit Scores
In the September issue of Money magazine, I read about this free offer. It turns out that if you had a credit card within the past 20 years, you can get free credit monitoring for six months from TransUnion as part of a class action suit settlement. The usual cost is $60, but you can get it for free by visiting listclassaction.com or by calling 866-416-3470 by September 24th.
Beeper Charity
Recently, my husband and I were having dinner with another couple. The husband mentioned that he had five beepers at home that he didn’t know what to do with. I did a little research and found a place to donate the extra beepers while helping charities at the same time. So, if you’re looking to get rid of spare mobile phones, pagers or PDAs, you can do so at CollectiveGood.

My son Michael is fascinated with WALL.E. When the movie opened, he went with his father and some friends. When he came back home, he taught his little brother to say “WALL.E!” like the robots in the movie and started talking about the Wall-E items that he wanted. I’m like, “maybe for Christmas”. He already has enough things and his tastes change so quickly.
Yesterday I received a package from DHL. It contained a WALL.E t-shirt, poster, action figure and sound book. It turns out that I won a prize from a New York Family contest that I entered a couple of weeks ago. In addition, Michael has another WALL.E t-shirt and cooler from a work event that we attended. Oh well, I guess that it is Christmas in July.

Later, when my husband Reggie found out about Michael’s WALL.E gifts, we laughed together. Michael has a way of attracting things that he wants. Really! He’ll say something like, “I want some strawberries” and without asking/before I can go to the store, a friend or family member will come by with…that’s right – strawberries! It’s insane.
Part of me wants to see if it works for the whole family. In my mind, I’d like to say:
-“Michael, don’t you want a brownstone?”
-“Michael, don’t you want Mommy to go away for a spa vacation at Miraval?”
-“Michael, don’t you want Mommy and Daddy to hit the lottery (that they’ve never played)?”
I don’t try to influence his prayers/requests though. I don’t want to mess with the purity (not selflessness, but purity!) of his asking.
On the flip side, my husband is like, “We’d better be careful!” If it were up to Michael, we’d have four kids (one more brother and one sister); a dog and a house full of video games (yikes!).
