College Application Month, Student Brag Sheets & More

A lot is going on in the college prep world this week…

College Prep Friday (10/18/24)

1. Senior Advisors and Counselors: Be sure to use the resources of the Senior Advisor and/or the Counselors at your teen’s High School.

2. October is College Application Month. Many New York State colleges are waiving their application fees.

CUNY (10/ 21-11/15: Application waivers for all New York City Public High Schools; 11/4 – 11/15: Application waivers for all New York State public and private high schools)

-SUNY (up to 5 free applications from 10/21 to 11/3)

-Various other NY state Independent Colleges and Universities (various dates)
The details are on HESC’s NYS Colleges Waiving Application Fees page.

3. The Coalition for College: It has an upcoming “Ask Us Anything: College Applications” panel on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. It features admissions counselors from Clark University, Syracuse University, Texas Christian University, and Vanderbilt University. (Some of their past panels have been very helpful to me. If you can’t make it, register anyway to get the recording.)

4. SAT Deadlines: Be sure to track SAT deadlines so that your teen won’t miss application deadlines. (For underclassmen: The PSAT/NMSQT is given to 10th and 11th graders in the fall while the PSAT is given to 10th graders in the spring.)

These are several other important tasks seniors should be working on finishing up.
5. Their Common App account and their Naviance account (if their school uses them) should be matched.

6. Teacher recommendations: Students should request them. A student brag sheet filled out by the student can help with their efforts.

7. College Lists: Seniors should be finalizing their college lists and deciding what types of admission (early action, early decision, rolling, etc.) they want.
