December College Prep: Applications, Scholarships & Financial Aid

December can be a rollercoaster month for college-bound seniors. Early decision notifications arrive, the holiday season adds its own pressures and regular decision application deadlines inch closer. This checklist will help you navigate December:

If there are any lingering tasks, December is the perfect time to tie up those loose ends.

  • Finish Personal Statement and Supplemental Essays (if applicable): Double-check them for any last-minute edits.

  • Keep Applying for Scholarships: December is still a great time for scholarship applications. You can use some of the scholarship search engines I have shared along with resources offered by your teens’ high school counselors.

Early Decision Results: Celebrate (or Strategize)

  • Early Decision & Early Action Applicants: They are normally notified mid-December through early January. If your teen receives some exciting news, celebrate. If not, it’s time for Plan B. Regular decision application deadlines are still great options.

Regular Decision Applications:

  • Regular Decision Applications are Typically Due on 1/1 or 1/15: Don’t let the holidays distract your family. Have your teens focus on the applications they haven’t submitted yet. (My son Sean has finished his CUNY and SUNY applications. The plan is for him to finish his private college applications before he goes on holiday break at the end of the month.)

Beyond Applications:

  • Keep an eye on admissions portals: Ensure colleges have received all necessary documents (i.e. transcripts, test scores, recommendation letters).

Plan B and Beyond:

  • Didn’t get Early Decision acceptance? It’s alright. Have your teen revisit their college lists. Make sure they have submitted applications to safety schools. Also consider adding any additional colleges that fit your teens’ criteria.

December can be a stressful month. Stick to your plan and try to maintain a positive attitude – even as you take breaks to celebrate the holidays.
