Last Friday, Reggie and I convinced the boys to come with us to see E.T. on the Intrepid ship as one of our summer “family fun” activities. Michael convinced us to let him be our sensei (karate teacher) for an hour in exchange for going to the movie. The lesson was actually quite fun and a good workout. I was impressed….Michael was a thorough, patient little teacher. He was tough though – both Reggie and I ended up having to do push-ups for not listening/playing around. I had to do 20 and Reggie had to do 60. Even little Sean had to do 20 push-ups…which were so cute.
We had a lot of fun at the movie. If you ever go, be sure to arrive early. The movie is scheduled to start at 7:30pm, but you really should aim to be in line by 7pm at the latest. (I think that the E.T. showing was especially popular because it is such a classic, but there were almost 1200 people in line! One-third of the line was not able to get in to see the movie.)
Once we did get on deck, the movie did not begin until 9pm and it ended around 11pm. It was worth the wait and long night though. The deck of the Intrepid was the perfect place to introduce my kids to E.T. The people in the audience were all in good spirits too and practically everyone clapped every time that the bikes levitated in the air during the film.
Most of all, it was wonderful to spend some time with “my guys” on such a beautiful night. The sky was clear, the air was crisp (bring an extra blanket) and the view was gorgeous. I forgot to mention that the movie series is also free because it is a part of the Intrepid Summer Movie Series. It doesn’t get much better than that!
