This week’s College Prep Friday Saturday has some valuable information to help you and your family navigate the college application process – from free college applications to resources for undocumented students.
Free New York College Applications
College applications can be costly. That is why I keep mentioning that many New York State colleges are currently waiving their application fees. (They didn’t do that when my oldest son applied for colleges.) These deadlines are approaching fast though, so don’t miss out!
Here’s a breakdown of the current application fee waivers:
- CUNY (City University of New York):
- October 21st – November 15th: Application fee waived for all New York City Public High School students.
- November 4th – November 15th: Application fee waived for all New York State public and private high schools.
- SUNY (State University of New York): Up to 5 free applications are offered from October 21st to November 3rd.
- Various Independent Colleges and Universities: Check the HESC’s NYS Colleges Waiving Application Fees page for specific deadlines and participating institutions.
College Readiness in November from QPL
If your family needs additional help getting college-ready, the Queens Public Library (QPL) offers a variety of resources and workshops throughout November. Check out their College Readiness Calendar for topics like the Common App, FAFSA, scholarships, crafting strong college application essays and more.
Options for Undocumented Students
Undocumented students face unique challenges in pursuing higher education. Here are some helpful resources that I came across that could help:
- Resources for Undocumented Students from Abraham Lincoln High School
- My Undocumented Life (Up-To-Date Information & Resources for Undocumented Students, Families, and Allies)
I hope that these resources help your family achieve your college dreams!
