How to Raise a Creative Son

How to Raise a Creative Son

“The guy who invented the ship also invented the shipwreck.”
–Seth Godin at Maker Faire NY 2012

Recently, I was asked to write a post on SheKnows about raising creative children as part of a collaboration between Hot Wheels and SheKnows. There were so many different angles that I could have taken, but I kept coming back to an email exchange between myself and the brilliant Seth Godin from back in 2012. After hearing his “Art and Science and Making Things” talk at Maker Faire, I emailed Mr. Godin the following:

Hello,

My name is Kimberly Coleman. I’m a NYC wife, mom and parenting writer. I heard you speak at Maker Faire and just wanted to take the time to say, “thank you”. My husband is a public school teacher and we both agree with your thoughts on the education system/are trying to raise our two sons to be “makers”. I was so inspired that I have been sharing about your thoughts both offline and online. Once again, thanks!

Take care,
Kimberly

To my pleasant surprise, he promptly emailed me back:

thanks Kimberly
your kids are lucky to have you

I totally geeked out from that brief response. (I checked…he answers his own emails.) Anyway, you can read my top insights on how to raise a creative son over on the How I’m raising my sons to be creative innovators post on SheKnows. Meanwhile, if you missed my initial posting of the speech when I was writing at Foodie City Mom, I am including the video below. Enjoy!
