Recently, my mom came to NYC to celebrate my 40th birthday. Since SHE was the one who did all of the work 40 years ago, I treated her to a weekend at Caesars Atlantic City. We had a blast. She had caught the train from Virginia and wanted to get a bite to eat near Penn Station once she arrived. Since she had a taste for something spicy, I suggested that we go to nearby Koreatown (32nd Street).
We ended up going to Food Gallery 32, a three-story Korean and Japanese food court. We were both very happy with our meals…and I had a chance to eat some kimchi. (Food brings back memories. Eating kimchi always reminds me of my former Korean roommate. She was a great home cook!)

A few days later (on my actual birthday) a group of girlfriends took me out for dessert at Tous les Jours, a French Asian bakery in Koreatown. It was crowded and after tasting the desserts, I could understand the appeal. My fruit and custard pastry was delicious.
