Did you know that the Atlantic Hurricane Season 2014 begins on Sunday, June 1st and ends on Sunday, November 30th? Honestly, I didn’t. Living in NYC, I hardly ever think about hurricanes..although destructive Hurricane Sandy was just two years ago. It’s always important to be prepared, so I was happy to freely spread the word with you regarding Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 25th-31st).
The New York City Office of Emergency Management’s “Know Your Zone” campaign is encouraging New Yorkers to find out whether their home or business is located in one of NYC’s six hurricane evacuation zones. (Do you know your zone?) The six hurricane evacuation zones are ranked by their danger of flooding from storm surge. Those in the zones that are most likely to flood are more likely to be ordered to evacuate in case of a hurricane or coastal storm. (Side note: If you’re ever asked to evacuate, please do so!)
In any event. there are several free resources available on the Know Your Zone website. A NYC Know Your Zone map, information on preparing a plan and ways to stay informed are just a few of the available options on the site. Meanwhile, you can download this Ready New York: Hurricanes and New York City guide which includes tips and a map of the various NYC hurricane evacuation zones. This version is in English, but you can find it in several different languages (as well as an audio version) on the Ready New York: Hurricane Guide site.
Stay safe!
