One of my goals for 2026 is to experience something new every month. In February, my husband and I checked that box with a lunch date to the renovated Studio Museum in Harlem—and I’m so glad we did.

What I appreciated most was the variety of art. The galleries showcase a variety of pieces, including works that make you stop and think, “Is that really art?” (My husband Reggie asked this more than once, which was pretty funny.) As the saying goes: One man’s trash is another man’s art.
Perfect for a Date (or Solo Visit)
Here’s what I love about museum dates: there’s no rushing. We wandered, we talked and we took our time in the gift shop. If you’re in the “open nest” years like me, or just looking for a thoughtful way to spend an afternoon, the Studio Museum offers exactly the right pace. It’s intimate enough that you won’t feel overwhelmed, but substantial enough to feel like a real cultural experience.
Tip: Go on a weekday if you can. We visited during lunch hours and had plenty of space to move through the galleries without crowds.
The Gift Shop: Don’t Skip It
We did something we rarely do—we bought each other gifts from the museum shop to remember our date.

The small studio store gift shop has thoughtfully curated items—art books, prints, stationery, and unique items you won’t see together anywhere else. Budget some extra time (and money) if you would like to take home a special memento.
