The Class Trip Parent

Last week, I went on a class trip with Michael’s Kindergarten class. I didn’t know exactly what to expect with 22 kids on a pumpkin picking adventure. Thankfully, it was a fun day. I highly recommend that you volunteer to go with your kid’s class on a trip at least once (if you can).

It was very cute, because Michael was so happy that I was there. The parent coordinator for the school came along with us since there were not enough parent volunteers (one other parent also came along). She told me that Michael had been so excited that I was coming that he was telling her all about it. I (purposefully) sat away from him on the bus ride to the farm and he kept peeking back as if to make sure that I was still there. One of the little girls in his class kept saying, “Michael, where’s your mommy?” Then, he would point back to where I was. For some reason, they found the same question and answer said over and over to be immensely amusing (?) I just thought that it was the sweetest thing, because sooner than I will like, the last thing that Michael will want will be someone asking where his mom is at!

It was also really neat to see Michael interact with the other adults and kids in his class. All of a sudden, there were faces to go with names of the kids in his daily stories. I already liked his teacher. Now, I love her. I really can’t fathom how she handles all 22 of those kids by herself on a daily basis. At one point, she said, “Oh, you’re great with the kids. You would be a great teacher.” I smiled, but in my mind I thought, “I would make a great teacher for one to four days tops a year…” I (definitely) am not the one to teach a lot of little kids on a continuous basis. I’ll leave that to the professionals! I also like that being around the other kids caused Michael to be a bit more adventuresome. I thought that we were just going pumpkin picking, but it turned out that we were doing much more. The kids went on horse rides, a hayride and they handled various animals in addition to picking out their pumpkins. I was pleasantly surprised that Michael rode the horse and held one of the exotic chickens. (If you live in the NYC area, Green Meadows Farm is a wonderful place to take your family.)

Michael and I talked about the day later that night before he went to sleep. I asked him was the day a good one. He responded, “It was a very, very, very good day.”
